THE
LADIES OF REGGAE
The Ladies of Reggae,
DJ Silky and Petina, have co-hosted the award-winning
Reggae Vibrations show (every Saturday night on WNUR,
89.3FM) for seven years. The Ladies, both in their 20s,
have been named Chicago's favorite reggae radio DJs for
the second year in a row on jamaicans.com.
Petina started hosting reggae radio during her third year
of college at Northwestern University, where she earned
a degree in journalism. She started her radio career at
14, when she was a high-school intern at WNUR-FM.
Silky got involved at age 16, when she began visiting
the studio with her sister. Not long after learning the
ropes at WNUR, Silky held a weekly Wednesday night set
as a selector at Chicago’s Wild Hare nightclub.
The Ladies are thrilled about Reggae Link Radio. “It’s
very important to the community, because it’s introducing
reggae music to a generation of people to whom the lines
between musical genres are often blurred,” says
Silky.
“This is something we’ve been wanting for
years,” says Petina. “Reggae Link Radio will
give us the chance not only to fill a need for the Caribbean
community in the Chicagoland area, but also to bring reggae
to an entirely new group of people—an amazing opportunity
for all of us.”

LENKY
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Lenky holds a degree in law
from St. George’s College. After graduation, Lenky
worked a government job, and fueled his love for music
in his spare time. Whenever he could, Lenky traveled to
shows DJ-ed by Road Star sound system, and started spinning
records with them in 1986.
Several years later, while working as a police officer,
he started playing music in the evenings for a sound system
called Cannon in the parish of St. Mary, Jamaica. As time
went on, Lenky immersed himself further into the reggae
music scene.
Lenky came to Chicago in 1996 where he helped to build
Q-ality Sound system. One night Q-ality had a sound clash
with Fireworks Sound and Joe hired him to play for Fireworks
Sound that same night. Lenky is currently a selector for
Fireworks Sound.
When Reggae Link Radio was created, Executive Producer
Joe Neish made an easy choice to include Lenky in the
show’s lineup. Lenky says that considering all of
the talented DJs in Chicago, he feels honored to have
been selected as a DJ for Reggae Link Radio. He says that
the groundbreaking program is a wonderful opportunity
for the city of Chicago and beyond.
“The Midwest has never experienced this before,”
says Lenky. “This show will open up a lot of doors
for the Caribbean listeners as a whole.”
